So, how does stress affect your health?
Stress… that annoying, overwhelming sensation that tends to get in the way of us pursuing our goals. We all know stress feels physically and psychologically uncomfortable, but exactly how does stress affect our health? In this blog, I’m going to share with you exactly how stress affects our bodies and our overall health.
Elevated cortisol levels, often dubbed the "stress hormone," can have profound implications for our bodies. This surge in cortisol production is commonly associated with weight gain, particularly in the midsection or belly area.
Despite efforts to shed excess pounds or build muscle, the influence of cortisol can thwart these endeavors, leaving individuals frustrated with their inability to achieve desired fitness goals. Furthermore, the accelerated aging process attributed to heightened cortisol levels serves as a stark reminder of stress's enduring impact on our overall well-being.
Stress-induced disruptions in digestive processes can impede the absorption of essential nutrients, setting the stage for a cascade of health issues. The decrease in digestive enzyme production, coupled with reduced bile flow from the gallbladder, compromises the body's ability to extract vital nutrients from food.
Additionally, diminished oxygenation and gastrointestinal blood flow further exacerbate nutrient absorption challenges, potentially leading to deficiencies that undermine optimal health.
Stress exerts a profound toll on the body's mineral reserves, manifesting in increased urinary excretion of crucial nutrients. Calcium, magnesium, potassium, zinc, chromium, selenium, and various trace metals are among the casualties of this process, leaving individuals vulnerable to deficiencies that can compromise overall health and vitality.
The delicate balance of intestinal flora, often referred to as the gut microbiome, plays a pivotal role in maintaining health and immune function. However, the onslaught of stress can disrupt this equilibrium, decimating populations of beneficial bacteria. The coagulation cascade, essential for wound healing and hemostasis, can be dysregulated under conditions of chronic stress. Heightened blood platelet aggregation, a hallmark of stress response, poses a significant risk factor for thrombotic events such as heart attacks and strokes.
The intricate interplay of hormones governing sexual function can be disrupted by chronic stress. A decrease in sexual hormone production can dampen libido, diminish energy levels, and compromise muscle mass—a trifecta of challenges that can detract from overall quality of life.

On top of all of this… Did you know that the brain CANNOT differentiate between real and imagined stress? YIKES!
