Life can feel overwhelming when anxiety takes over, and your mind becomes scattered. You may notice how this affects your ability to stay focused, and your behavior changes when you feel anxious.
I've noticed that I tend to be disorganized when interacting with people. I'm anxious and lost in my thoughts. Although I may not have been conscious of it at the time, my behavior shows that I am anxious. And it influences the way I speak to other people.
According to research, centering teaches you to focus on the present moment, taking control away from other problems and negative thoughts and assisting you in remaining stable and grounded. Centering is an old visualization method popular in Aikido, the Japanese defensive martial art of "spiritual harmony."
When you are in the center, there is no resistance. You are conscious, awake, and engaged. There is a calmness within. Your actions are impulsive because you are living in the present.
This present awareness comes from being centered, not from you. In the center, neither joy nor sorrow is felt. You are neither good nor bad. You are impartial in the center.
Whether dealing with a client or family or trying to get through the day, staying centered and aware of your thoughts and reactions can be challenging. In this blog, I will share how to find balance, stay calm, and center yourself within 60 seconds.
What The Center Feels Like
Being centered feels like a deep quiet; whether happy, sad, positive, or negative, an inner calm always remains. In moments when it seems like things might fall apart, this sense of being centered keeps you alert and alive. You feel active but not with tension or resistance. It's more natural like you can act spontaneously in the present moment.
You feel stuck in the past or worried about the future. You act reactive and lose focus easily. You keep checking your phone, answering emails, and scrolling through social media. You try to do too many things simultaneously and can’t tell what is urgent or important. You might turn to caffeine, sugar, or snacks to keep going. Watching TV, drinking alcohol, or shopping feels like a way to escape. But soon, you feel even more tired, with negative self-talk and no sense of control. These are clear signs you are out of your center.
Living out of your center makes you lose self-confidence and feel constant anxiety. You feel overwhelmed and start to deal with laziness or procrastination. Happiness and success feel far away, and you struggle with fear, anger, or shame. You keep thinking about the past or worrying about the future. You criticize yourself a lot and stop trusting your instincts. Your job, money, and relationships suffer, and you feel empty and without balance. These are clear signs that living outside your center affects your peace and fulfillment.
To return to your center, find small moments of stillness and bring your awareness back. It may seem not easy initially, but it becomes easier over time with more practice. It takes years to build this habit, but each time you practice, you get better at finding your inner calm. Even when under stress, keep believing in your ability to center yourself. Over time, you'll learn to detect when you're off balance and return to your calm state.

Now, I will share some tips to help you center yourself within 60 minutes.
Approach your practice with a beginner’s mind. Let go of preconceived beliefs and be curious and open-minded. Avoid letting old ideas or practices block your effectiveness. By adopting a child-like innocence, you can see the value in new methods and reduce the influence of outdated beliefs. This fresh perspective helps you stay centered and enhances your practice.
Treat your practice like a scientist running experiments. Run various experiments to discover what helps you stay centered. Make observations about how different sensations affect your body and mind. By testing different methods, you can detect what makes you feel calmer and more present. This approach helps you find what works best for you and enhances your ability to stay centered.
Have fun with your exercises. Don’t be too serious or get too caught up in the process. Being playful helps you stay relaxed and alert, making it easier to stay centered. Remember, a positive attitude can reduce tension and make the practice more enjoyable for your mental health.
Mindfulness meditation and other simple practices can be great gifts for staying centered. These methods help you train your mind to stay calm and balanced. By being nonjudgmental and more aware, you get better at handling the challenges of each day. Regular practice helps you build the skill to stay centered and deal with stress. The exercises mentioned above can help you stay calm and focused in your daily life.
