How to Recharge Yourself When You’re Feeling Drained & Burned Out

Okay, let's be real – we ALL hit that wall sometimes. You know, that feeling of being completely drained, like you're running on fumes? 😫 Between work deadlines, family chaos, and trying to keep up with life, it's no wonder we feel burnt out.

But here's the thing: You don't have to stay stuck in that exhausted state. Ignoring burnout can lead to serious health issues, from depression to decreased productivity. It's time to hit the reset button and prioritize your well-being!

It's common to feel burned out occasionally due to long workdays, rushing to eat, and having little downtime. According to research, being burned out may lead to depression, and being constantly exhausted is unhealthy. As a result, you may become less productive.

In the past few years, many people have felt the negative effects of stress.

In this blog post, I'm sharing my go-to tips for overcoming burnout and reclaiming your energy. We'll ditch the quick fixes and focus on sustainable strategies that nourish your mind, body, and soul. Get ready to feel refreshed, recharged, and ready to take on the world! 💪

What is Burnout?

Burnout is a state in which you feel very tired physically, emotionally, and mentally. It happens when there is too much stress for a long time, leading to exhaustion. You might feel fatigue, and the energy might be low.

Burnout often comes from too much work or stressful situations. You may feel overwhelmed with responsibilities, making it hard to focus or feel good about your work.

Burnout can negatively affect your well-being and can even change how you perceive yourself. You might feel like you are losing your personality.

The takeaway: Burnout is the accumulation of consistent, ongoing stressors without a break.

Tips to Recharge Yourself When You’re Feeling Drained & Burned Out

Now, let’s discuss all the tips to recharge yourself when you are feeling drained and burnout in detail.

Create Healthy Habits

Feeling drained or burnt out? Like you're running on fumes? Girl, it's time to hit the reset button! ⏸️

Creating healthy habits isn't just about eating your veggies (though that's important too!). It's about finding balance in your whole life – work, play, and everything in between.

Here's the deal:

  • Set Boundaries, Boss Babe: Work hours are for work, YOU time is for YOU. Ditch the guilt and reclaim your evenings and weekends. I know this is easier said than done. If you have the budget, I suggest getting help from counselors or therapists to make boundary-setting an easier task for you.
  • Lunch Break = Sacred Time: Step away from the desk, savor a delicious meal, and recharge those batteries. I love having my lunch at a different table than the one I work to be able to fully decompress meanwhile.
  • Vacations Aren't Optional: Plan that getaway, even if it's just a weekend staycation. You deserve it! I love planning one staycation a quarter to be able to have regularly scheduled breaks during the year.
  • Say "No" to the Toxic Stuff: Whether it's unhealthy habits or energy-draining people, learn to set boundaries and protect your peace.
  • Find Your Joy: What makes your heart sing? Make time for those things, even if it's just 10 minutes a day.

Remember, a balanced life is a happy life. And when you feel good, you have the energy to crush your goals and live your best life! ✨

Do Exercise

Exercise is important for your mind and body and can help improve your mood. Exercises like swimming, running, and cycling are great for the heart. These activities decrease stress levels and increase endorphin hormones. If you like sporty activities, try dancing, skiing, or skating.

If you are not into aerobic exercise, yoga and meditation are good choices. They help reduce anxiety and chronic pain, help your mind relax, and decrease symptoms of burnout.

Weightlifting is another great option that makes you stronger and boosts your mood. By finding the right exercise, you can feel better and have more energy every day.

Ditch the "E" Word: Reframing Exercise as Movement 🤸‍♀️

Okay, let's be honest – the word "exercise" can feel like a chore. It conjures up images of sweaty gyms, complicated routines, and that dreaded feeling of "I should be doing this, but I really don't want to."

But what if we ditched the "E" word altogether and started thinking about it as movement instead? Suddenly, it's not about punishing your body or forcing yourself to do something you hate. It's about finding ways to move that feel GOOD, that bring you joy, and that fit seamlessly into your life.

Think about it:

  • Dancing in your kitchen while you cook dinner 💃
  • Taking a leisurely stroll with your dog 🐶
  • Playing tag with your kids at the park 🏃‍♀️
  • Trying a new yoga class or a fun Zumba session 🧘‍♀️

These are all forms of movement that nourish your body and soul. And the best part? They don't feel like a chore!

When you reframe exercise as movement, you open up a world of possibilities. You can find activities you genuinely enjoy, making it easier to stay consistent and reach your health goals.

So, let's ditch the "shoulds" and start embracing the joy of movement. Your body (and your mind!) will thank you. 💖

Seek Professional Help

Burnout can make you feel like your thoughts and emotions are too much to handle. When this happens, getting professional help is a good idea.

Mental health services offer many options, ranging from talk therapy to hypnosis. Talk therapy lets you share your thoughts and feelings with someone who listens and helps.

Hypnosis might help some people relax and manage stress differently. Finding the right help for you can make it easier to recharge and feel better.

Find A Hobby

Finding a hobby you love can help you feel better and reduce stress. Spending time on activities you enjoy gives you an opportunity to relax and have fun. Doing something you like after a hard day at work can make you feel refreshed, whether it’s painting, gardening, or playing music.

It helps you manage stress and keeps your mood up. When work gets tough, knowing you have a fun hobby waiting for you can make it easier.

I love playing video games and doing Search Engine Optimization (SEO) during my free time. Sometimes I like to spend some time reading a book or going out for a long hike in the forest.

Spend Time With Your Loved Ones

Being with people who make you happy can give you a good boost of energy. Spending time with close friends and family helps you recharge because they make you feel better instead of bringing you down. When you are with these people, you feel more positive and ready to face challenges.

Good company can remind you of what is important and help you focus on the positive. Instead of feeling stressed or tired, you get a boost that helps you feel better.

We are social creatures, it's in our DNA. Yes, we all have different forms of socializing, but we all do it and need it.

Let’s journal. What do you think is the best way someone can interact with you?

If you feel comfortable, share that with them and have them do the same exercise and share with you. You will find opportunities to spend time with your loved one while satisfying your own preferred way of socializing. Me, I’m a fan of parallel play.

Reduce Caffeine

When you drink too much caffeine, you may feel more stressed and anxious. Cutting down on these drinks can help, particularly if you are already feeling drained and burned out.

Reducing caffeine allows your body to recover naturally and can lower stress. You don't have to quit completely, but try drinking less coffee or tea. Replace some drinks with water or herbal tea. This simple change can help you feel calmer and more in control, making it easier to recharge and handle burnout.

Eat Healthy (Easier said than done, I know. I’ve been there)

When you feel ongoing stress, your body releases hormones that make you want junk food. It can cause cravings for unhealthy snacks, especially when you are working from home. These cravings can continue as long as the stress does. Luckily, you can feel more in control by eating healthier foods that improve your mood.

Choose whole-grain carbs, fish, and nuts to help reduce stress. Vitamin-rich fruits and veggies are great for your body, and a little dark chocolate can boost your mood. Warm and soothing meals like soup can also bring comfort. When you have cravings, try munching on nuts or yogurt instead of junk food. With a balanced diet, you will find it easy to handle stress and feel better.

Get Enough Sleep

Stress and sleeping are connected. Not getting enough sleep can worsen physical and mental problems, lead to burnout, and make everyday life hard. To improve your sleep and help your patterns, try to stick to a regular schedule. Try to sleep fot 8 to 9 hours every night to help your body and mind.

Avoid caffeinated beverages in the afternoon because they can affect your quality of sleep. Instead, relax by reading or doing something calming like yoga or meditation before bed to make falling asleep easier. With these things, you can improve your sleep and feel more refreshed.

Go On A Vacation (or Staycation!)

Feeling burnt out? Sometimes, a change of scenery is exactly what the doctor ordered. But here's the thing: you don't need to hop on a plane or break the bank to recharge. A staycation can be just as rejuvenating!

Imagine this: trading your hectic commute for lazy mornings in your PJs, exploring hidden gems in your own city, or simply curling up with a good book in your favorite cozy spot.

Staycations offer the perfect opportunity to:

  • Unplug and de-stress: Ditch the work emails and social media notifications. Give your mind a break!
  • Rediscover your city: Explore local parks, museums, or try that new restaurant you've been eyeing.
  • Embrace guilt-free relaxation: Sleep in, take long baths, or binge-watch your favorite show. You deserve it!
  • Reconnect with yourself: Use this time to journal, meditate, or simply do nothing at all.

Remember, taking breaks isn't selfish – it's essential for your well-being. So, whether it's a weekend getaway or a full-blown staycation, give yourself permission to rest and recharge. You'll come back feeling refreshed, inspired, and ready to tackle whatever life throws your way.

Enlist Your Achievements

It is common to feel like you are not doing enough, especially when you are tired or stressed. However, this can make you feel overwhelmed and lose energy. To help with this, sit down and make a short list of your accomplishments. Seeing what you have achieved can give you the motivation to move forward.

Keeping a list of your successes helps you remember what you can do. It shows that you have done a lot already. Every small achievement matters and helps you see progress. When you know what you have achieved, it is easier to stay positive and focused.

Let Go Of Past Mistakes

Mistakes can cause a lot of stress when you keep focusing on them. Thinking about the past and what went wrong can make you feel stuck. It is important to let go of these mistakes so you can move forward. Remind yourself that everyone makes mistakes, and you can learn from them.

Focusing on your goals and the future can help you let go of past errors. Think about what you want to achieve and make a plan to get there. It keeps your mind on positive things and helps reduce stress.

Take Breaks From Negative People

If you are feeling down because of certain people or situations, it might be time to take a break. Sometimes, we are around people who drain our energy. Putting distance between yourself and these relationships can help you feel better and recharge.

Taking a break from stressful situations and people can help you find balance. Use this time to focus on yourself and the things that make you happy. Surround yourself with positive people who support you and give you energy. It will help you feel more in control and make it easier to handle stress.

Conclusion

Stress happens when there is too much to do and not enough time to rest. To handle stress, try the ways mentioned above that make you feel better. By doing these things, you can enjoy your work and personal life more.

Recharge yourself by making even small lifestyle changes. Take care of your mental needs and physical needs to recharge your personal battery. If you still feel exhausted after taking action to recharge, consult a doctor.
